Letter to David Lidington MP, Foreign Office Minister

David Lidington MP
Minister of State
Foreign and Commonwealth Office

16th December 2011

Dear David,

I am writing to voice my concern about the Russian Government's plans to introduce a law criminalising any mention of homosexuality in public discourse.
I welcome the Foreign Office's unequivocal condemnation of the proposals in its statement last month, and I am sure you share my relief that the second reading of a Bill, scheduled for 30th November, did not take place. However, LGBT rights campaigners in Russia fully expect there to be renewed attempts to push the legislation through, so it is critical that the international community continues with its efforts to uphold the human rights of thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Russians.
I would be grateful for further information about what the British Government are doing to maintain pressure on the Russian authorities to drop this Bill, and what steps the Government will take should the Bill make any further progress.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,

Caroline Lucas, MP, Brighton Pavilion
