Letter to Graham Dalton, Chief Executive, Highways Agency

5th October 2012

Dear Graham,

I am writing to express my concern about excessive delays caused on the A27 caused by lane closures.

I appreciate that improvements to drainage between Lancing and Shoreham are very much needed, but I have to agree with constituents who have asked me why these works cannot be carried out overnight to minimise disruption.

According to some reports, journeys that usually take seven minutes are lasting 45 minutes because of the lane closures and I understand that this chaos is set to continue for up to 3 months.

I welcome the Highways Agency’s decision to suspend work at peak times and work through the night, but would urge you to go further and consider only making lane closures at night time.

I also understand that details of lane closures are being released on a weekly basis, giving drivers insufficient notice and making it difficult to put in place alternative travel plans.

Is there a way to review this with a view to further minimising disruption on what is already one of the region’s busiest roads?

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Caroline Lucas MP, Brighton Pavilion
