Letter to Rt Hon Norman Lamb - Minister of State for Care and Support

The Rt Hon Norman Lamb MP

Minister of State

Date: 8th December 2014

Dear Norman,

I am writing to you in support of the Alzheimer Society’s ‘Right to Know’ campaign.

As I am sure you are aware, it is currently estimated that only half of people living with dementia receive a formal diagnosis, and that it is estimated that by the time of the next General Election in 2015, there will be 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK[1]. This means that half of people living with dementia, as well as their family or carers, are left unsupported and without the resources to help them cope with the complexity of this illness.

Like the Alzheimer Society, I feel that it is extremely important that diagnosis rates are improved as soon as possible and I support the call for the Government to commit to a 12 week limit for a dementia diagnosis.

Additionally, I strongly believe that everyone diagnosed with dementia should have access to a specialised Dementia Advisor to help them come to terms with their condition.

I would, therefore, like to know what plans the Government has in place to support those living with dementia, and to improve diagnosis rates so that they are at least 75%.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this matter.

Yours sincerely,
