Letter to Rt Hon William Hague MP, Foreign Secretary: Shaker Aamer

Letter to Rt Hon William Hague MP, Foreign Secretary

The Rt Hon William Hague MP
Foreign Secretary
Foreign and Commonwealth Office
King Charles Street
London

12th December 2011

Dear William,
Following the letter to you from Clive Stafford-Smith of Reprieve dated November 18th 2011, I write to register my extreme concern and alarm at the deterioration in Shaker Aamer and implore you to step up efforts to secure Shaker's release.
Follow his recent visit to Guantanamo Bay, Mr Stafford-Smith asserted that Shaker is in extremely poor physical health and in his opinion is ‘gradually dying in Guantanamo Bay'. For Shaker to die in the illegal custody of the United States would be an unspeakable travesty and would seriously affect this country's reputation of standing up for its citizens abroad.
I attach an open letter to the US Congress to which I am a signatory, along with John Leech MP, Jeremy Corbyn MP and Michael Meacher MP all of whom are demanding Shaker's release. I look forward to an update on what progress has been made to this end as we approach the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Guantanamo Bay prison.
Yours sincerely,

Caroline Lucas, MP, Brighton Pavilion
