20's plenty in Brighton

Was alarmed to read in the Argus today that Brighton is the UK's 7th riskiest city for road traffic accidents.

With large numbers of cars, buses, vans and bikes all sharing a limited number of busy roads, that number seems less surprising and more like a nasty inevitability.

Thats why the Greens support the 20's Plenty campaign in calling for a 20mph default speed on residential roads.

We need to do something about traffic in Brighton, and cutting the speed limit is a common sense solution that would have immediate effects.

1 in 40 pedestrians struck by a car at 20mph die, compared with 1 in 5 at 30mph. At 40mph the survival rate falls to 10 per cent. The numbers really do speak for themselves.

And that's not all we can do to reduce accidents.

Given that the UK has some of the highest rail fares in Europe, I have called for train fares to be reduced, and Greens would double the number of buses and make them more affordable, both of which would reduce traffic and the need for car travel.

We must give people realistic options for travel - and ensure our streets are safe.
