While I’m passionate about the benefits of cycling, I have to admit I find the prospect of weaving in and out of the traffic quite nerve-wracking too.
That’s one of the reasons why the Brighton Bike Train, which I took part in recently, is so fantastic. Organised by experienced volunteers, the scheme works on the ‘safety of numbers’ principle. When you’re part of a group, cycling feels much safer and much more fun.
There were around 30 of us on a ride to the launch of the Lewes Rd improvements scheme. While it hasn't been without controversy, I don’t think anyone can disagree with the intention to make Brighton safer, more bike-friendly and less polluted. And the Bike Train organisers say the journey from the Level to Falmer is so much safer that they no longer need to run their daily rides on that route.
Fortunately you can still catch the ‘Train’ to Albion matches, or arrange a one-off for your own event. And there are more fun events planned, including a ride from the Level to Lewes on Bonfire Night. As another MP once put it, it’s time to get on your bike.
