Caroline joins firefighters’ picket line
For immediate release: Wednesday 25 September 2013
Green MP Caroline Lucas showed support for striking firefighters today, joining the picket line at Preston Circus in Brighton.
Firefighters were taking action over concerns about public safety and pensions. Under national government proposals, they are being expected to work until the age of 60 – despite concerns that many will be unable to meet fitness standards.
Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said:
“This action is not just about fair pensions, but also public safety. Brighton and Hove’s firefighters undertake invaluable work, risking their lives to save others. But it is dangerous and unfair to expect them to fight fires and rescue families into their late fifties.
“They are taking this action very reluctantly, because the Government has refused to take their concerns seriously. I’m very pleased to add my support.”
