Caroline joins up with Brighton postie for daily rounds

Brighton’s Green MP praised the work of Royal Mail staff on a visit to a local delivery office today – and donned a postie’s jacket for the morning rounds.

Caroline was invited to see the final stages of the sorting process at Brighton’s main delivery office, before joining local postman Steve Gorman to learn more about the challenges faced by postmen and women in the city.

Speaking after the visit, Caroline said:

“It was a great experience to go behind the scenes at the Brighton delivery office and get a sense of all the hard work that goes into keeping Royal Mail moving.

“Accompanying Steve as he posted mail in the constituency meant I was able to see for myself the various challenges he and others come across in their daily rounds.

“Our postmen and women provide an incredibly important service for the city’s residents – and for me as local MP, in making sure that crucial constituency correspondence gets where it needs to go.”

John Beard, Brighton Delivery Office Manager, said:

“We’re delighted that Caroline Lucas MP took the time to experience the everyday challenges faced by our delivery postmen and women.

“The visit gave us the opportunity to show Caroline how we are modernising our organisation.

“In the South East, we are investing in new automation and new delivery equipment for our postmen and women as we respond to the changing nature of the modern postbag.

“We are delivering more parcels and fewer letters than ever before and the tools for the job need to reflect that.”
