Caroline picks up Lord Houghton Award for animal welfare

The BUAV has presented Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas with the Lord Houghton Award in recognition of her service and contribution to animal welfare.

Caroline has a long record of working on animal protection issues. As a Member of the European Parliament she ensured animal welfare was high on the agenda.

In particular, she worked to make improvements to the revision of the European legislation governing animal experimentation.

More recently, Caroline has supported BUAV's campaign to end the UK involvement in the cruel trade in wild-caught primates for research by sponsoring a Parliamentary Reception and tabling an Early Day Motion (EDM 957).

She is also supporting BUAV's campaign to end the use of animals to test household products and has taken a pledge to only use cruelty-free products to clean her constituency office in Brighton.

Caroline said: "I am really delighted to receive this award from BUAV, an organization which is at the forefront of efforts to improve animal protection.

"Ending animal cruelty has always been one of my main concerns as a politician and a campaigner, and I will continue to do all I can to promote the protection of animals in our society."

BUAV's Chief Executive, Michelle Thew stated: "We are honoured to present Caroline Lucas with the Lord Houghton Award.

"She has been a great advocate for animals during both her time as an MEP and now as an MP, always ensuring that animal protection issues are high on the political agenda."

Nomination of the recipient for the Lord Houghton Award rotates annually between its four sponsoring animal protection organisations. It was presented this year by Michelle Thew, BUAV's Chief Executive at the Houses of Parliament.
