Caroline has raised concerns about abuse of terrorism laws.
In an Early Day Motion published today, the Green MP says the Terrorism Act must not be used to harass journalists who investigate sensitive subjects such as human rights abuses.
The motion criticises the use of Schedule 7 of the Act in recent cases, including that of David Miranda, who was detained for working to bring information leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to public attention.
And it raises concern that a UK journalist with the Wikileaks team, Sarah Harrison, is in exile and has been advised by her lawyers that it is not safe to return home.
Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said:
“Successive governments have claimed these laws are needed to protect us from terrorism - not to undermine freedom of the press.
“The Terrorism Act must not be used to intimidate those raising issues of legitimate public concern.
“It’s time for an urgent review of the way the act is applied, so we can be confident that it’s being used to protect – not to intimidate or persecute.”
