Caroline to compere 'Speak out on Sexism' event

Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas is well known for campaigning to highlight the everyday sexism that permeates the media.

On the evening of Thursday 5 December, she will be compering  the ‘Speak out on Sexism’ event in Brighton, which will explore links between media sexism and attitudes that underpin violence and discrimination against women and girls.

Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said:  “There are few things more important than ensuring everyone is safe in their own home, in their workplace, and their school.  Sadly, for far too many women and girls, this is not the case, and there is strong evidence that sexism in the media plays a significant contributory role.

“But this event will be a positive celebration of women speaking out.  There’s a fantastic line-up of speakers, as well as amazing local performers, and I’m really excited to be hosting what promises to be a brilliant evening.”

Speakers at the event include:

  • Lucy-Anne Holmes, founder of the No More Page 3 campaign
  • Melissa Benn, journalist, campaigner, and writer of ‘What should we tell our daughters ?  The pleasures and pressures of growing up female’
  • Holly Dustin from End Violence Against Women
  • The Twitter Feminist Youth Army
  • End Violence Against Women – a national coalition calling for concerted action to end violence against women

There will also be performances from performers including singer Sophie Pointer, comedian Kate Smurthwaite and poet Sabrina Mahfouz.

Thursday 5 December, Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton, 58-67 Grand Parade, Brighton, East Sussex BN2 0JY
