Last September, Caroline secured a meeting between constituents affected by Muscular Dystrophy, and the Health Minister Norman Lamb MP. They raised concerns about funding for the neuromuscular care co-ordinator post for the South East Coast, being threatened. The post provides a range of practical and emotional support for people affected by muscle-wasting conditions.
Soon after that meeting, it was announced that funding would be guaranteed to March 2014, but Caroline has now had the even better news, via a written answer from the health minister Norman Lamb, that there will be longer term funding beyond that date from specialist neuroscience centres in London.
Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said:
“This is great news. After months of uncertainty, ministers have listened. I know this will be a huge relief for people in Brighton living with with muscle-wasting conditions, and for their families, who depend on the expert support this post provides.
“I pay tribute to the great work of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.”
Nic Bungay, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Director of Campaigns, Care and Information, said:
“The Minister’s confirmation of funding after March 2014 is excellent news for people living with muscle-wasting conditions and their families across the South East Coast region who need access to the essential care, support and advice provided by the neuromuscular care co-ordinator post.
“The support provided plays a fundamental part in preventing emergency hospital admissions and therefore saving NHS costs. The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign greatly appreciates Caroline Lucas’ support, which has been integral to helping to secure the long-term future of the post.”
