Last night I opened a parliamentary debate on the Climate & Ecological Emergency Bill, calling on the Goverment to respond much faster to the climate crisis.
The current 2008 Climate Act is hopelessly out of date and needs to be strengthened and the year when the UK will host a critical UN climate summit is the year to do it.
The Government needs to acknowledge that its climate policy is inconsistent; we are off course to meet interim carbon budgets; and the science on which are legally-binding target of net zero emissions by 2050 is based has moved on. The law needs to be updated so that it is in line with the science.
I'm pleased that the CEE Bill so far has the support of 98 MPs from eight different parties and MPs from Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the SNP and Plaid Cymru all spoke in the debate.
