Domestic violence needs to be taken seriously.

1 in 4. 25%. A quarter. If those were betting odds, they’d be pretty good. Yet these are your odds of suffering domestic violence if you are a woman living in Britain. An article in today’s Argus provided a bleak reminder of the horrors of domestic abuse. Rise – a local charity who support women and children suffering DV – do fantastic work in providing expert help and a vitally needed lifeline. I’ve met some of the women working for Rise, and they are dedicated and passionate.

Yet - for all their work - it is not enough. We need more help for women who suffer abuse. Brighton has not had a rape crisis centre for almost 8 years, with the nearest one being in Crawley. Not good enough. Green Party policy is to ensure rape crisis and domestic violence centres are guaranteed funding, so ridding them of constant uncertainty - money better spent on supporting vulnerable women than on banker’s bonuses!
