Government must change course on austerity

Figures released by the Office of National Statistics today show that UK unemployment rose to 2.6 million in the three months to January (1).

Responding to the statistics, Caroline said:

"Our youth unemployment crisis is worsening, 270,000 public sector jobs were lost last year, and increasing numbers of people are being forced onto unemployment benefits.

"In Brighton and Hove alone, youth unemployment has shot up by 20% in just six months.

"It's astonishing that, despite all this, the Chancellor is still refusing to change course.

"This Government's obsession with austerity is costing us dear - even many economists now agree that the deep cuts are seriously harming our chances of recovery.

"It's now blindingly obvious that the private sector can't create enough jobs to match those lost in the public sector, which is why we urgently need the Government to change direction and invest in job creation."
