Admittedly, licensing doesn't sound like a fascinating subject, but it's one which affects a lot of people living here in Brighton.
I've heard a huge number of complaints from exasperated residents who are being kept up late by noise, who are scared to walk in some areas after dark, or who have been victims of abuse or attacks from drunk assailants.
The Green group on the council have been pushing for tighter regulation on licences, and for a wider reaching cumulative impact area in the centre of town, meaning places applying for licences would have to show that they would not add to crime and disorder.
Not long ago, the Argus revealed that there was one 'booze shop' for every 84 households, an alarmingly high number. And domestic violence locally has risen dramatically with the advent of 24 hour licencing.
Unsurprisingly, it seems as though what was first seen as a step leading to a more 'European' style of drinking has just exacerbated binge drinking - it's just that now people can binge for longer.
That's not to say that people shouldn't drink, or have fun - I enjoy a glass of wine after work as much as anyone!
But we seem to have crossed a threshold here in Brighton. It seems that every week there are fresh stories of people being injured or killed outside clubs and bars.
I'm doing a late night walkabout with Sussex police soon, where I will be taken to places like West Street to see the impact for myself. After all I've heard, I'm thinking this isn't going to be much fun!
Talking of nights out, you may have seen in today's Argus that comedians Marcus Brigstocke, Russell Howard, Alistair McGowan, Mark Steel and Mitch Benn (and possibly Catherine Tate!) will be staging a gig at the Theatre Royal during the Conservative Party conference here in Brighton.
It's a one off event, and looks to be an evening of incredibly funny political comedy - my whole family is very much looking forward to it.
Marcus and his friends are very kindly putting this gig on for free, as a fundraiser for the Green Party.
It's great that they have chosen to support us in this way, and I want to say a huge thank you to them!
You can buy tickets here - but be quick, they seem to be selling fast!
