Hertford Primary School in Hollingdean is leading the way when it comes to incorporating environmental issues into lessons and the day to day running of the school.

This has gained much-deserved recognition: Hertford has been awarded a Green Flag for the third time and I was delighted to visit the school last week to congratulate everyone involved.

The Green Flag is awarded by Eco Schools, an international programme that supports schools in developing work on sustainability.

Eco Schools has high standards and the Green Flag is its highest accolade.

It’s a fantastic achievement for a school to win such an award – three times in Hertford’s case!

The children’s enthusiasm for the Eco School work was evident as they told me all about it, and I was able to find out more about the Eco Code and the frog bin used to make food leftovers into compost.

At the beginning of the day I also met with families in the playground and heard more about how the wider school community is getting involved.

All in all, I was completely inspired by the positive work at Hertford and the eagerness of the children to learn and get involved in making things better.
