Holocaust Memorial Day

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day - a sobering day, which also marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

I've found it difficult to write a blog about this subject - the horror of what happened is too great to write about in a couple of hundred words.

But it's something I've been thinking about a lot today. It's important that such acts of violence are not forgotten.

Over a million suffered and died at the hands of the Nazis, experiencing cruelty that few of us will ever know - even now, 65 years on, these horrors remain vivid in Europe's consciousness.

Whilst today is a day to reflect on the unimaginable hardship experienced by many groups - Jews, gay men and women, those with disabilities, religious minorities - I think it is also a time to reflect on the bravery and kindness shown by individuals during these terrible times.

The theme of which this year is 'The Legacy of Hope', and I think it brings these acts of humanity to mind.

I'll be going to see the 'Portraits for Posterity' exhibition at the Jubilee Library, which is on until the 13th February. It's an independent project to create memorable photographs of survivors of the holocaust now living in Britain, and tell some of their stories.

I think these stories are important to hear.
