Plenty of further celebrations are taking place in Brighton this weekend.
Tonight there’s an Extravaganza at Sallis Benney Theatre with a great line up including We-Bop, Brighton’s all female a capella choir; local writers Ink on my Lips; and singers and musicians Beth Prior, Shauna Parker, Lenna Santamaria, Joyce McLeod and Nicky Mitchell.
Doors 7pm for 7.30pm start.
Tomorrow morning I’ll be opening the International Women's Day event in the Dome.
This runs from 10am-4pm with performers, workshops, an exhibition on 40 years of the Brighton Women’s Centre, complementary therapies, a crèche, raffle and an array of stalls.
I’ll be speaking again at 1.30 in the Main Hall at the Dome as part of a panel discussion.
Chaired by Razia Aziz of The Equality Academy, the panel also includes Lucy Holmes of the No More Page 3 Campaign, Lili Evans of the Twitter Youth Feminist Army and Empowerment Consultant Abigail Sinclair.
The National Union of Teachers SE Region is also holding its women’s conference here in Brighton tomorrow, and I’ll be speaking there too.
And last but not least, the Jubilee Library will be hosting events from 12-4pm, including the SupaSistas event. More info is at http://www.brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk/WhatsOn/Pages/InternationalWomen'sDay2014.aspx.
On Sunday evening the Cowley Club on London Road is hosting a gig to raise money for the Survivors’ Network - doors open at 7:30pm.
This is an exciting time to be a feminist, with inspiring groups locally, such as Brighton Women’s Voices; and nationally, such as No More Page 3 and Lose the Lads Mags.
International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate all we have achieved, but also an opportunity to highlight what more we need to do.
I hope that events this weekend will inspire you to get involved.
