Iraq, Ten Years On – public meeting in Brighton

Ten years on from the invasion of Iraq and the huge anti-war protests in the UK, campaigners will hold a public meeting in Brighton this Tuesday (19 March) to discuss the impact and long term significance of the Iraq War.

At the invitation of the Brighton & Hove Green Party, Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, will be joining a number of national and local figures, including Green Party Leader Natalie Bennett and Lindsey German (Stop the War Coalition) at the Friends Meeting House, Ship Street.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Caroline said:

"Ten years ago, more than a million people marched in London and millions more demonstrated worldwide against the invasion of Iraq.

"Despite huge popular opposition, Tony Blair and the Labour Government took the country to war, on what was later proven to be false evidence of 'weapons of mass destruction'.

"Ten years later, campaigners and people who have witnessed the impact of the conflict on Iraqi lives are coming together to discuss how that happened, the impact it has had and the dangers of the UK being drawn into further wars in the Middle East."

The full line-up of speakers includes Caroline Lucas MP, Lindsey German (Stop the War Coalition), Natalie Bennett (Leader, Green Party), Anne-Marie O’Reilly (Campaign Against the Arms Trade), Phélim Mac Cafferty (Deputy Leader, Brighton & Hove Council) and Jo Wilding (a barrister working with Iraqi refugees).

The meeting will be chaired by Davy Jones (Green Party parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown). There is no advance booking - just turn up on the night.

Venue: Friends Meeting House, Ship Street, 7.15pm, Tuesday March 19th, 2013.
