Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas has today criticised the Liberal Democrats' review of alternatives to Trident as a ‘fudge’.
Commenting on the Written Ministerial Statement on Trident Alternatives Review, Caroline said:
"This review is nothing more than a fudge. The Liberal Democrats – just like the other two main parties – have completely failed to ask the most obvious question.
"Any serious review would ask whether Britain really needs a nuclear missile system that will cost an estimated £100 billion over the next 30 years.
"The Cold War finished decades ago. Trident simply is not relevant in the 21st century. Even the Government’s own National Security Strategy downgraded the risk of state on state nuclear warfare.
"The Greens are the only party that would end this shameful waste of taxpayers’ money, and address key questions about how to meet our security needs in the modern world."
