Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas will hold a three hour roundtable discussion on drugs policy in the city tomorrow (6 September) to explore new ways to tackle Brighton's drug problem - and reduce the number of drug-related deaths (1).
The MP, who is an active member of Parliament's All Party Group for Drug Policy Reform, is bringing together medical experts, academics and key local stakeholders, including the police and council representatives, in a high level roundtable to help develop an alternative approach.
Lucas believes that Brighton could set a positive example for other cities battling high levels of drug misuse by shaping a different approach which builds on successful initiatives that are already happening in the city.
Caroline said:
"One of my top priorities as a local MP is to tackle Brighton and Hove's very sad reputation as the drugs death capital of the UK. In order to do that, we need to recognise the reality that the so-called ‘war on drugs' has failed - and start dealing with drugs differently.
"Here in Brighton and Hove, we feel more than most the consequences of a national drugs policy that has failed. I think we are also well placed to start shaping an alternative approach - one that builds on successful evidence-based treatment and support programmes."
Participants in tomorrow's session will discuss current drugs policy and policing issues, dealing with addiction and misuse from a health perspective, the effectiveness of current treatment programmes, and examples of alternative methods used in other cities - in the UK and abroad - which might inform a new approach for Brighton and Hove.
