London Road - Portas Fund Success

Congratulations to all involved in the successful bid for London Road to become one of the Portas Pilot high streets. Since over 400 applications were received, and the city was one of just 15 successful bids, this is a really brilliant achievement for all involved.

I was contacted about the bid in June and was happy to lend my support, recognising that a cash injection to London Road would be a very helpful boost to the area - benefitting the local community and supporting local traders.

In my letter of support I highlighted the plans to work with local landlords to bring back empty properties into use, particularly the idea of using empty retail space to support entrepreneurs testing out new business ideas.

Being creative with the way we use our empty space will hopefully help to realise the huge potential that the London Road area offers.

Brighton will receive in the region of £100,000 which will be used introduce new measures to tackle antisocial behaviour as well as combat empty shops and business premises.

It’s clear from the correspondence that I receive that residents care very much about this area. The strong sense of community, and the partnership between local traders and residents are a strong basis on which to build. Hopefully this successful bid will act as a catalyst to further action to recreate the London Rd as a thriving area for years to come.
