Today is the consultation deadline for an application by Morrisons Supermarket to sell alcohol at proposed premises at 58 - 62 Lewes Road.
The community around Lewes Road saw off another supermarket chain in 2010.
I was delighted to work closely with residents at that time to oppose Tesco’s plans to build a store on the site of a community garden.
I’m supporting local residents again this time, and have written to the Council stating my concern over Morrisons' application.
I think there’s no need for another alcohol licence in an area that already has plenty of alcohol outlets – and sees plenty of related disturbances.
I am also concerned that another chain supermarket in this area will have a detrimental impact on local businesses.
It’s important to be clear that residents are not opposed to this particular site being used.
It’s just that they would like to see its use based in, and responsive to, local needs, and I fully support their attempts to maintain community facilities on and around the Lewes Road.
