Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas today joined the campaign to end 'legal loan sharking' and ensure every resident in the constituency has access to affordable credit.
Speaking on the day of the reading of a backbench proposal in Parliament, Caroline said:
"With some firms charging over 400% in interest for a loan, it's time that the Government stepped in to help protect customers here in Brighton from high street loan sharks - and help local authorities say no to them when they try to set up shop in our communities.
"We also need to do more to support access to affordable credit through credit unions, and assist those who get into debt through counselling and debt management services.
"That's why I'm supporting proposals to deal with these problems, alongside many Labour MPs who want to see everyone being protected from unscrupulous lenders."
Gavin Hayes, General Secretary of Compass, the group leading the 'End Legal Loan Sharking' campaign added:
"It is fantastic to see Caroline Lucas MP supporting this Bill. Currently, legal loan sharks are charging up to 2,500% APR, leading vulnerable people into spirals of debt and misery.
"The Government needs to support this Bill and end this national disgrace."
