Opening housing trust premises, meeting pensioners and approaching Ministers

Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) does incredibly inspiring and effective work here in Brighton.

It supports some of the most vulnerable people in the city and I regularly work with BHT advisers on constituency casework.

So this week I was delighted to attend the official opening of new premises on North Street.

This took place on World Mental Health Day and one of the projects that will be housed at the premises is the Route 1 Project, which supports men and women with mental health problems in dedicated accommodation in the city.

I also met people from the Threshold women's counselling service, which recently received a Big Lottery grant and I had a tour of the wonderfully colourful and beautiful crèche on site.

On Tuesday I met with the Pensioners Association and discussed their concerns.

We talked about a range of subjects: opposition to Government plans for the NHS; fuel poverty and the impact it is having on pensioners and the elderly; and the Pensions Bill.

I welcomed the announcement later in the week that the Government will slightly delay the planned second rise in the pension age but we still need to keep the pressure up - and I look forward to liaising with the dynamic Pensioners Association on this issue again!

Finally, today marks the launch of Brighton & Hove's Big Alcohol Debate.

I'll be joining in and approaching relevant Ministers over local authorities having more power to take action to reduce the impact of alcohol misuse.

This issue is of major concern and I will be tabling demands on the Government to introduce national minimum pricing for alcohol in supermarkets and off licences.
