Responding to today's interim report on disinformation and fake news from the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas MP said:

"This incredibly important report demonstrates that our democracy isn't safe unless we stand up for it. The Government's response to revelations that leaders of the Leave campaign broke electoral laws has been alarmingly complacent.

"It's vital ministers implement all of the Committee's recommendations and begin an open dialogue with the public about how we can bring the laws that underpin our democracy into the 21st century. If Theresa May refuses, she will be sending the message that our democracy is for sale.

"And in light of all we've learned about the true nature of the Brexit campaign since 2016, a People's Vote on the final deal is crucial."
