There is a huge amount going on today including debate and voting on the Protection of Freedoms Bill. This is wide ranging legislation that covers everything from CRB checks to aggravated trespass.
I have proposed a couple of amendments of my own but am also supporting one which seeks to scrap the website blocking clauses in the Digital Economy Act.
This Act was rushed through during the last days of the previous Government and allows for sites to be blocked merely if there is suspicion that they might infringe copyright in future.
Website blocking powers already exist under the Copyright Act (section 97a) for sites that are proven, through the courts, to be infringing copyright.
Greens have long campaigned against the Digital Economy Act which has plenty more wrong with it too. It doesn't look like the website blocking amendment to the Protection of Freedoms Bill will be voted on tonight due to lack of time but I will certainly continue to do what I can to protect internet freedom...
