Riptide Gym

Over the last week or so I’ve replied to a number of constituents who contacted me about the eviction notice that Brighton and Hove City Council has served on the Riptide Gym.

The building is in a beautiful spot and I can understand why those who use the gym are concerned and upset by its threatened closure.

I understand the strength of feeling on this issue and have asked the Council to make relevant documents available to interested parties.

A senior Council officer told me he doesn’t foresee any problem with information being shared although he made clear that: “the technical engineering advice given to me is that it is in an unsafe structural condition and thus is at risk of collapse”.

Clearly safety concerns have to be taken extremely seriously so, if that is indeed the case, I will be urging the Council to support the gym in finding a new location quickly and will seek clarification about timescales of repair work.

I have also contacted the manager of Riptide Gym to ask if there are any specific concerns about the way the eviction has been handled, and I look forward to hearing the response.
