On a recent visit to Fields Pharmacy in Eldred Avenue, I was shocked to learn that around £100million of waste medicines are returned to the UK's community pharmacies for waste disposal every year.
In order to better understand this issue, and the hugely important services which pharmacies provide to local communities, I met with Nasim Ladak, the owner of Fields Pharmacy, and Vanessa Taylor from East Sussex Pharmaceutical Committee.
Pharmacists don't just dispense prescriptions; they offer great advice and help people to use their medicines properly, and could also play a part in reducing waste medicines - so I'm keen to see their role preserved and enhanced in the government's plans for NHS reform.
