Supporting Sussex students

I've added my support and sent a statement of solidarity to the students and staff who are protesting the proposed 115 job cuts, and who've joined in the occupation at Sussex University. I wish them the best of luck in fighting their case.

The last thing we need in a recession is for cuts in government spending. It's exactly at this time that we need real public investment in education and public services, to keep people in jobs, and ensure Britain has the resources to get out - and stay out - of recession.

Young people are facing challenging times - high rates of tuition fees which put many off university in the first place, course and staff cuts, and then upon graduation a depressing job market with high rates of graduate unemployment.

We need to be investing in our future generations, and the future of Britain, not cutting spending at every possible opportunity.
