Sussex MPs to join Lewes Amnesty event to highlight Guantanamo injustices

The Lewes branch of Amnesty International is to host a meeting this Sunday (21 October) to boost awareness about Guantanamo Bay and the ongoing incarceration of British resident Shaker Aamer.

The US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, continues to operate despite international condemnation – and the pledge by President Obama at the start of his term to close it down.

Former Guantanamo detainee Omar Deghayes will join the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion and the Liberal Democrat MP for Lewes for a screening of the film ‘Outside the Law: Stories from Guantanamo’, directed by Polly Nash and Andy Worthington.

A panel discussion will follow, focusing on issues arising from the film and the need to pressure the UK government to urgently secure the release of Shaker Aamer.

Andy Worthington and representatives from Reprieve are also set to attend.

Speaking ahead of the event, Caroline said:

“The failure to close down the Guantánamo Bay detention facility has left an indelible stain on the reputation of the United States – and is a clear reminder that some of the worst consequences of the ‘War On Terror’ remain with us today.

“One of the strongest tools we have to combat the threat of terrorism is to vigorously defend the fundamental principles of justice, democracy and human rights upon which our society is based.

“Yet the US has repeatedly turned its back on international law, giving a green light to detention without trial and to the gross violation of human rights both at Guantánamo and at prison facilities across the world.

“Our MPs must now up the pressure on the UK government to do far more to hold President Obama to his word and finally bring an end to this tragic chapter of illegal incarceration at Guantánamo.”

Norman Baker, MP for Lewes (Liberal Democrat), said:

“Guantanamo Bay represents the worst of the Bush administration’s “war on terror” and whether or not it holds some very dangerous individuals, such detention without trial is a travesty against human rights.

“Despite the efforts of the UK, it is frankly very disappointing that President Obama has failed to fulfil his promise to close it, and concerning that it continues to hold a UK national.

“This event is a great opportunity to highlight this serious issue and keep up the pressure.”

Tickets are free of charge, available on the door or in advance from Skylark Bookshop, Needlemakers, Lewes.
