International Womens Day takes place on 8th March and in the run-up to the occasion I visited the Brighton Women’s Centre.
I was accompanied by Green Party Leader Natalie Bennett, who was in Brighton for the day.
Brighton Women’s Centre (BWC) is a vital part of community life in the city and has been supporting women in Brighton & Hove for over 35 years.
The services they offer include counselling, groupwork, open access drop ins, holistic therapies, volunteer training, self development courses and childcare.
While at the Centre Natalie and I had the opportunity to speak with service users.
Many of them highlighted the cumulative impact of the Government’s so-called “welfare reform” policies, which are having such a huge and negative impact on women.
We also had an update on two events planned to mark International Womens Day.
The first of these is on the evening of the 8th itself, when the BWC is holding a fundraising extravaganza at the Sallis Benny Theatre, featuring female performers from Ukulele players to feminist a capella.
Then on the 9th there’ll be an all day celebration of International Womens Day at Brighton Dome, which I’ve already put in my diary!
For more info on both events and on the work of the Centre see www.womenscentre.org.uk.
