Rough deal for carers

I'm glad the Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has finally concluded that the benefits system for carers is complex and confusing.

I've spent time in recent months meeting with people in Brighton and Hove dedicated to caring for sick or elderly family members, and was shocked at the poor level of financial support and other resources available to them.

The news today that up to a fifth of the UK's carers are unable to successfully navigate the benefits application process is disturbing, if not surprising. Especially as it has also emerged that some 2 million of the UK's carers could be missing out on what benefits are available.

The PAC's findings should serve as an urgent wake up call to the Government and others to rapidly reform this bureaucratic and outdated system.
