Letter to the Prime Minister: Saudi Arabia

12.12.17

Dear Theresa,

I am writing following your recent visit to Saudi Arabia, and the lack of any progress on the dire situation in Yemen.  The purpose of this letter is to urge you to support a new United Nations Security Council resolution on an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire.

Whilst the engagement in recent days from yourself and the Foreign Secretary on Yemen is welcome, it is failing to stop airstrikes and the blockade.  The Saudi led Coalition are clearly ignoring your calls and those of President Trump for access.

It is critical that a UNSC resolution obliges the Saudi led Coalition to end its blockadewhich threatens the survival of the civilian populationand protect Yemen's northern sea and air ports.

It is time to increase pressure on the warring parties and their international allies to return to the negotiating table and set up a peace process that is inclusive and involves meaningful participation of women, youth and other marginalised communities, at the local and national level.

Lastly, it is vital that the UK suspend both current and future licensing of UK arm sales to Saudi Arabia for use in Yemen, and properly applies the Arms Trade Treaty in all future licensing decisions.

Yours sincerely,

Caroline Lucas
