Earlier this month it was reported that I had pledged support for a rally in London’s Trafalgar Square calling for a referendum on Punjabi independence.
I had provided a statement to Sikhs For Justice setting out my support for the principle of self-determination – which I extend to people around the world, including in Scotland, Wales, Catalunya, West Papua, Tibet, Palestine, Western Sahara and so forth. I also said I stood in solidarity with all those peacefully fighting discrimination.
My statement was not intended to indicate support for any particular terms or outcome of a referendum and I was not aware that it would be interpreted as it has been.
I am sorry for any misunderstanding and would like to clarify that I am not seeking to influence or comment on whether there is a legitimate case for Punjab becoming a separate state.
