I read in the Argus this morning that the Environment Agency estimates 60 000 buildings in Sussex are at risk from flooding. It's another reason why success at Copenhagen is essential. Here in the UK, the Pre-Budget Report could have included bold projects to address the recession and the climate crisis. In Kirklees, Green Party councillors have pioneered the UK's first free insulation scheme for all householders, regardless of income.
As MP for Brighton Pavilion, I will fight for a national scheme along these lines. In winter, it keeps people warm in their homes. All year round, this type of scheme saves people money on fuel bills and cuts energy use. The new economics foundation, in July 2008, said that we had only 100 months to stabilise greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. We're at 85 months and counting. The Greens are the only party calling for a 10% reduction per year in emissions, and the PBR should have placed this at its core.
