Letter to the Minister of State for the Environment about puppy smuggling

The Rt. Hon Zac Goldsmith

Minister of State of the Pacific and the Environment

DEFRA

19 April 2022

 Dear Zac,

I am writing to you on behalf of a number of constituents regarding puppy smuggling and the illegal importation of puppies into the UK.

The Dogs Trust’s investigative report revealed that 14% of online advertisements were for imported dogs - a significant portion of which were under the minimum age for importation.

They’ve identified several loopholes in the Pet Travel Scheme, and I want to share my constituents’ concerns and urge the Government to tighten the requirements of the Scheme by introducing visual checks on dogs entering the country.

A robust approach is urgently needed, and that means prioritising animal welfare legislation like the Kept Animals Bill without any further delay.

I would be grateful for your response and thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,
