On the campaign trail - race equality

With the election drawing ever closer, there are simply not enough hours to fit everything in! And then there's always the unexpected... for example, I was just coming out of the office in Surrey Street, when I was happily accosted by a bunch of 'Robin Hoods', complete with pointy hats and green leggings, who were promoting the Robin Hood tax.

This is where large scale financial transactions are taxed a minute amount - say, 0.05% - to potentially raise billions of pounds to tackle global poverty and climate change.

They were pleased to know that the Robin Hood tax is already Green Party policy, and wished me luck on the campaign.

I enjoyed speaking at a Race Equality community group meeting, where I spoke alongside long-time activist Satish Kumar.

We discussed a range important issues, noticeably that Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and individuals are a lot more likely to live in poverty in the UK - that this is still happening in 2010 says volumes about previous governments, and I hope that whoever forms our next government will put this at the heart of their 'to do' list.

The Green Party is committed to BAME equality and ending unfair discrimination, whether in the DNA database, in schools or in the workplace, and to addressing issues of poverty by reducing tax for those on lower incomes, bringing up the minimum wage to a living wage of £8.10 (alongside reductions in corporation tax for small businesses) and providing a basic state pension of £170 per week.
