PLEDGE ON PESTICIDE REDUCTION IN EUROPE

Caroline Lucas MP will today pledge that Green MEPs will campaign for an initial 50% EU-wide reduction in the volume of individual active toxic pesticides used to grow fruit and vegetables, by 2022.

More and more pesticides are being used on our farmland, despite the fact that the impacts on wildlife and human health are not fully understood.  The number of pesticide applications has doubled in the past 25 years, the toxicity of pesticides has increased and so has the variety of pesticides used.  Over the same period, there has been a catastrophic decline in ma

CLIMATE EMERGENCY DEBATE

I welcome this debate and the current upsurge in political backing for action on climate change.

From Extinction Rebellion to the youth climate strikers and Greta Thunberg’s visit to the UK last week, the accelerating climate crisis is finally breaking through into the mainstream of political and public consciousness.

And not a day too soon.

Oxford Farming Conference, Jan 4 2019

1. Introduction

Thank you so much for inviting me to be here today.

I was following yesterday morning’s session via the live stream and was really encouraged that when Anna asked the audience whether they still felt there was a divide between farmers and environmentalists the overwhelming majority said no.

Caroline marks Srebrenica Memorial Day

To mark Srebrenica Memorial Day, Caroline Lucas MP honoured those who were murdered during the genocide 23 years ago.

The MP for Brighton Pavilion signed the Remembering Srebrenica Book of Pledges, promising to stand up to hatred and intolerance and promote a fair, equal and cohesive society for everyone.

Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the worst atrocity on European soil since World War Two when over 8,000 men and boys were murdered just because of their faith in the Srebrenica genocide.

Theresa May could have prevented much of damage caused by Windrush scandal

Caroline has said responsibility for the Windrush scandal falls “squarely on the shoulders of our Prime Minister” after revelations she ignored a critical report while serving as Home Secretary.

In response to a Parliamentary Question, the Government has confirmed it did not act on recommendations of the Chasing Status report published in October 2014, when Theresa May was Home Secretary.

CATCH THE BUS WEEK

It’s nearly the end of Catch The Bus Week – an opportunity to encourage people to travel by bus, and to highlight the environmental benefits of bus travel, particularly in reducing air pollution. If we all switched from car to bus for just one journey a month, it would mean one billion fewer car journeys on our roads and would save 2 million tons of CO2 every year.

Fixing the system - some Green priorities for EU reform

Our political system is in desperate need of reform.  We need to tackle the harmful influence of big business and corporate lobbyists.  We need more transparency and public scrutiny of decision makers.  And we need social justice and environmental protection to come before short-term corporate profit.

All of these things are true in Westminster – and equally applicable at EU level.
